Dr. Clue Treasure Hunt

Agenda (Gold Package)

30 minutes Open the session, introduction and hunt explanation:
- During this time the Dr. Clue facilitator conducts an icebreaker and then lays the foundation for the importance of the session's activities. The facilitator then outlines the rules of the treasure hunt and hands out materials, including maps, pens and full-color clue sheets.
45 minutes Treasure Hunt: Stage 1
- This first stage serves as a practice hunt for the longer treasure hunt to follow. Generally there are four clues in this stage, leading to nearby "mystery locations". Participants become acquainted with the dimensions of the challenge before them. In this stage, they receive very little "coaching" in order to highlight participants' "default" patterns of team behavior. (Their performance in the un-coached stage one will later be compared with their performance in the coached stage two.)
45 minutes Mid-brief & Skill-building -
  • Mid-brief: This section involves a discussion of the value and learning harvested from the stage one treasure hunt. After hearing the answers to the clues, participants review their successes and failures and discuss best practices going into stage two.
  • Skill-building: At this time, we help participants "get organized" for their next treasure hunt. They will create a "team contract" that sets down on paper their individual roles and team ground rules/norms of behavior.
(Lunch possible at this point, for programs starting mid-morning)
90 minutes Treasure Hunt: Stage 2 - This second stage is much longer than the first and the clues are considerably more difficult. Generally there are seven clues in this stage, leading to fascinating "mystery locations" that are a bit further afield. Participants have a chance to see how the discussion and skill-building has improved their overall team performance.
45 minutes Final Debrief: Next Steps, Final Words and Close Out the Session - This section asks participants to review their successes and failures on the two stages of the treasure hunt. After hearing the answers to the clues, participants will think about the parallels between the teamwork demonstrated in the treasure hunt and the teamwork required in the workplace. And they will discuss how they will use the concepts learned in the session upon returning to work.
