Charlotte, N.C. - Downtown
The largest metro area between Atlanta and Washington, D.C., Charlotte is one of the fastest growing of U.S. cities. Nicknamed The Queen City, (in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, wife of Britain's King George III), Charlotte offered considerable opposition to the English during the American Revolution, prompting General Cornwallis to dub Charlotte "a hornet's nest of rebellion" (leading to another of the city's nickname: The Hornet's Nest). A traditional center for gold mining, Charlotte today is the second largest banking headquarters in the United States after New York City. During your treasure hunt in downtown Charlotte, expect to encounter glittering mosaics on a chaise lounge; a statue celebrating the town's "golden" past; a giant disc; the answer to why the South has produced so many good writers, and so much more.
